about

Branwen wrote this in their first year of NCAD in their first experiments with automatic writing. They used to sing in the stairwells and then scribble words on a page, they underlined their favourite word combinations and played the guitar and this song was created.

Julie, who had been experimenting with the musical saw and singing into a little milk jug found a unique magic to bring to the song as well as her beautiful harmonies which arrived instantly as they always seemed to do!

The studio session for this song was magical. Martin Brunsden had come down with a van full of instruments to record for the day, at first he played double bass and discovered that the line "a swarm of bees" was in fact a swarm of B notes. He stayed until midnight playing clay pots and bells and saws and this is a testament to the magic he brought to the album. It remains one of our favourites.

lyrics

You locked us up in here and threw the key to chance
You knew we'd wind up here and now it's even hands
Oh now it's tangled word and tangled limb
This sea is dark at heart and no I cannot swim

And though you knew it would hurt you did it all the same
There is no instant cure to save you from your pain
And the rain will wash us both away

You stare at me from there your body like a grave
My mind is parched my heart is what your body craves
And in your eyes survives the flotsam from the storm
When will you realise you love is like a swarm of bees

And I was not for you and you were not for me
You like my disease and I was like your queen
The thoughts pile up where my dreams lay down to die
In voice in vice you were the web and I was the fly
